There are still a few places left for the above guided walk in Sutton Park. Dr Mike Hodder is following up his talk given to the Society in November and will take the assembled group around a selection of the many well-preserved archaeological remains of various date to be found in the Park. This will include banks and ditches which provide evidence of how deer were hunted in the medieval deer park and how the wooded areas were managed. Many other features will be examined including fishponds, millpools and trackways; remains of a 19th century golf course and racecourse; and traces of a First World War camp. And more.
Meet at 11.00 am at Town Gate (just inside the entrance to the latter), off Park Road, Sutton Coldfield, nearest postcode B73 6BU. There is ample car parking just inside Town Gate. The latter is a short walk from Sutton Coldfield railway station, and indeed the town centre. The guided walk, which will take approximately 2 hours, will cover about 2.5 miles, some of it on rough grass and unsurfaced paths, and there will be occasional uneven surfaces and the odd gentle slope. Suitable clothing and footwear should be worn, some parts may be muddy; and there is no shelter en route.
