Only very occasionally open to the public, this will be an opportunity for a group of us from the Society to visit the privately owned and moated 14th Century Maxstoke Castle (fortified manor house) near Coleshill which was commissioned by Sir William de Clinton. We will learn of the history and the architecture and be shown the ceremonial rooms and other internal features, including a chance to climb the Gatehouse, followed by a tour of the gardens. The whole should take maybe a couple of hours. Booking is £24 per person and includes tea, coffee and biscuits. Cheques payable to Staffs Arch & Hist Soc and a completed booking slip should be posted to Richard Totty - see the flyer (pdf) attached. Also, see additional image (png) below showing the impressive aspect.
Maxstoke Castle is well worth a visit - many who have been hitherto confirm this. The relative co-ordinates to find it are: Postcode B46 2RD. OS Grid reference SP 223891. It is located 3 miles or so east of the town of Coleshill in Warwickshire.
